Lourdes and the Sanctuary

The Sanctuary Notre-Dame de Lourdes : At the heart of spirituality

Just a few minutes’ walk from 11 Rue Notre Dame, the Sanctuary of Lourdes unfolds its 52 hectares of devotion and history. Whether you are a pilgrim or a curious visitor, the architecture and atmosphere of the Grotto domain are not to be missed.

The Grotto and the Water

The Grotto of Massabielle is the epicenter of the Sanctuary. This is where the spring discovered in 1858 flows. Nearby, the fountains allow you to drink from it, while the baths offer a spiritual bathing experience unique in the world.

The Three Basilicas

The domain houses an architectural masterpiece composed of three superimposed buildings: the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception with its slender stained glass windows, the Rosary Basilica with its Venetian mosaics in Romano-Byzantine style, and the immense Underground Basilica of St. Pius X, capable of accommodating 25,000 people.

Statues and Chapels

Continue your path towards the famous Statue of the Crowned Virgin located on the esplanade. Across the Gave river, the Chapels of Light offer a silent space where hundreds of candles placed by visitors from all over the world burn continuously.

Explore the Town of Lourdes: Heritage and Nature

The Fortified Castle and the Pyrenean Museum

Majestically overlooking the Marian city, the Fortified Castle of Lourdes is an unconquered thousand-year-old fortress. It offers a spectacular panorama of the Sanctuary and the Pyrenees mountain range. Inside, the Pyrenean Museum retraces the history, arts, and popular traditions of the region through rich collections.

In the Footsteps of Bernadette: Le Cachot

Immerse yourself in local history by visiting the Cachot (former prison on Rue des Petits Fossés) where the Soubirous family lived, as well as the Boly Mill, Bernadette’s birthplace. For a fun visit, the Wax Museum and Le Petit Lourdes (a recreation of the village in 1858) are popular stops for families.

The Lake of Lourdes

Just 3 kilometers from the town center, the Lake of Lourdes is a vast natural space of glacial origin. It is the perfect place to recharge: walking or mountain biking, stand-up paddleboarding, fishing, or playing the 18-hole golf course on the edge of the forest.
